Mother - Golden Glow of the Home

The man is the brace and ceiling of his house,
He is the straight walls rising from the earth,
The woman is the golden glow of lamps,
The firelight on a hearth. ~Emery Petho

I am not feeling this AT ALL right now... but I've posted it here to remind me that this is where I want to be.

I found this quote in my magazine from Above Rubies.... a magazine that sometimes I really dislike because I feel like I will never measure up... and sometimes I love because it can be very uplifting.

Have you ever read the magazine... what do you think?

  1. Dear Katrina, Thank you for being so generous with your appreciative comments, especially as I sense that you could do with some encouragement right now. I would like to say more but feel that a comment box is not the place... L x

  3. Beautiful, friend! Yes, I receive Above Rubies and yes I am about to unsubscribe after years of receiving it. I think the legalism that pops up there (although I think the women all have true hearts after God) can be death to my walk with the Lord. It subtly creeps into my thinking and my attitudes and I find myself focusing on myself and choices instead of who God is and what He settled on the cross which brings me FREEDOM in lifestyle choices.

It's wonderful for us to inspire each other, but not to put heavy weights or chains on each other. And sometimes I feel that way when I come away from there and it's taken me time to undo some of thinking I bought into through that publication.

I don't want it to sound as if I disrespect them, but I think it is healthy for me to be able to say that I can disagree in many areas and still love them and be at peace with them.

Walk YOUR walk with the Lord and don't let fear rob you of your love and joy in Him :)

  4. Katrina,

I hope that you start to feel better soon! I know we all have feeling sometime of complete confusion. I've never read this magazine/blog but I have read a lot that leave me full of doubt. That is why it is so imporatant to know the Word of God for yourself :o) It is helping me through so many of my questions and doubts over silly things like lets say, jeans ;o) Sounds silly, but it was a struggle. I've decided that it is important to dress like a woman, but I can still dress modestly and look very cute and girly in a fine pair of jeans too!

I hope you have a good day!

  5. I know exactly what you mean! I have read the magazine. Plus encountered others that follow the same thoughts. It can be very discouraging.

I have decided that besides God, the only person I have to please is my husband. As long as he is happy with my job as a wife and mother, I'm doing ok. We can't judge our lives by someone else's standard. It's too difficult. We have to do what does God expects of us. And that is different for each of us because we are all different people leading different lives. God's plan for my life is not the same as God's plan for their lives. And that's ok.

I am sure you are doing just fine. Don't let Satan beat you up today. You are a good wife and a good mother. Hang in there my friend!

Wow! I didn't mean to write a book. I will now step down off of my soapbox :o)

  7. This is my first time hearing about that magazine. I might have to check it out and see what I think.

PS- You don't have to find 15 bloggers to give the award. Just go with whomever God may place upon your heart.

    Blessings to you!!

  8. Hello precious sister Katrina,

I've never read Above Rubies before, but I'm thinking it's about becoming a Proverbs 31 woman? Anyway, if you'd like, you're more than welcome to come visit my free, online Bible study blog A Wife's Biblical Submission. It's an exegetical study on Proverbs 31:10-31(which I'm STILL trying to finish writing ☺).

We have an incredible group of the most fabulously Christ-loving, Christ-honoring and encouraging sisters who participate in this study. It's a meme study, by the way...a little different, but hey Jesus is very relational and so is this study.♥

Oh, thank you for visiting my blog and leaving such a kind comment!

    Bless you precious sister,
    Sunny

    P.S. I LOVE your pictures! They're simply beautiful!♥

  9. I haven't seen the magazine, but know the feeling all too well. God has been convicting me of comparing myself to others. Praise Him for the promise that He will finish the work He began in us! No matter how things look or how we feel about it, He is conforming us into the image of Jesus. He can even use our failures to do so. Glory!

  11. I have to admit, the Above Rubies magazine often leaves me feeling a little...disturbed. I will NEVER measure up to most of what they talk about. I actually had to quit reading it because much of it bothered me so much. Yes, there is a lot of very good stuff in it too,, but most of it left me frustrated.

We are who God made us. We cling to Him. We grow and learn from His word. We are saved by His grace. He loves us. He created us. He continues to mold me/us. That is all I really need to know.

I know I only know you through your blog, but I think you're a wonderful mom!

  12. What a beautiful quote! I've never heard of the magazine, but recently I decided not to listen to a Christian program for a while, not because it was bad but because I was more dedicated to listening to it and not meditating on scripture when I had time alone. I think it is great that the Holy Spirit guides each of us closer to Himself.

  13. What a beautiful quote...

I have to say that I do enjoy the magazine. I do not agree with all of what they believe - but that goes back to knowing and understanding the Word of God and not just believing what others tell you. :) I enjoy the magazine for the pure fact that they love and value their roles as mothers and wives and seek to encourage others in that. For several years I was surrounded by women that did not enjoy being a mother; they did not have vision in their roles... While I am not going to walk the same walk as they are but I appreciated their heart.

It looks like you have some very sweet boys and I look forward to getting to "know" you better. :)

  14. I didn't know anybody else felt this with the magazine! I love the encouragement for motherhood, especially since there are hardly any magazines out there with that mission, but too, I wish it didn't come as a package. The package that seems to be portrayed is that if you want to be a happy, godly wife & mother, you must fulfill: wearing skirts exclusively, eating raw, having as many children possible, etc...

I wish they could encourage a mother's heart and character and also represent a better variety of situations. I also felt like I had to spend a few days deprogramming after reading it. It's sad because I don't really know of another free magazine that encourages mom like that one does. Let me know if you know of one!
