Seeking...

Writing out the Word on index cards to be taken with me throughout the day...

...pulled out of envelope to be studied during times of waiting... or on evening walks...

to be glanced at and then repeated in quiet thoughts while stitching up quilt by hand,

or to be propped on window sill to be read while preparing food for empty stomachs...

I fill my heart, hiding His Word deep down, food for my soul when I need it most...

which is so often, each and every day.

One of my favorite passages about memorizing in the Bible is this:

How can a young man keep his way pure?
By living according to your word.
I seek you with all my heart;
do not let me stray from your commands.
I have hidden your word in my heart
that I might not sin against you.
[...]
I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways.
I delight in your decrees;
I will not neglect your word.

Psalm 119: 9-11 & 15-16.

Isn't this what it's all about anyway...

...that we might not sin against Him?

*************************************************************************

And then I made these...

Tiny envelopes made to tuck a single tea bag within...
... and possibly a scripture verse to encourage the recipient?

A great way to use up little scraps of fancy paper,
don't you think?

  1. I just love coming here. Those are beautiful and I enjoyed reading your thoughts on memorizing scripture. I am so horrible at memorizing..I always have been. So, I've never had the courage to dive into a lot of scripture memorization. Even when I have 'memorized' (if you'd call it that) some, I don't retain it for very long. It's very frustrating.

  2. That is a great idea for using up scrap paper! And even a better idea to be memorizing bible! I find writing out verses help me remember them, even if I am not TRYING to memorize them. I also have started writing them on my bathroom mirror... :)

  3. Oh, thank you for pointing me in such a positive direction. We need to be memorizing the Word. I help my kids with AWANA and yet I'm not intentionally memorizing it myself.

  4. When I was in grade school yet, our family spent the summer memorizing Philippians. I can still say large chunks of it off by heart, and it is still one of my favorite books of the Bible. I'm working on portions of James this year -- another one of my favorite books.

Would you consider writing out a tutorial on how you made your envelopes? I rally like them!

  5. You're joining us?!?! Yay!!! I love your note cards and your lovely envelopes! I am looking forward to this journey! Of course, I am completely out of 3x5 cards right now, so I have to wait 'til I run to the store to write mine out. But, I've been working on making some of the memory keepers that tonia had on her blog yesterday.

    Here we go, my friend:)

  7. My teacher in my adult bible fellowship (or Sunday School) challenged our class in memorizing 10 new scriptures a week. The way he taught it was that the first day you read each 25x; the next day 20x, and so on, by the time you get to the end of the week you'll have most memorized. Any of them that you cannot retell without help, then you have not memorized it yet, so you put that one on next week's list.

I was doing this but when we began school in Sept I stopped doing it. I have my index cards beside me now and I'm starting it again. I am going to start up again with one scripture for Bible doctrines like God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit, Heaven, Hell, Salvation, Faith, Sanctification, and so on.

  11. Oh, Katrina! How you inspire! I have not been so ambitious as you--merely working on a tiny verse; but asking my boys to participate with me. So rewarding to hear them hide His word in their hearts! They've done this in Sunday school, and I have helped--but how special to pick the verses together and come aside one another in the learning.

Perhaps I should make them one of these pretty card holders?

Oh--they would end up in the wash! This I know...

    You are a lovely lady.

  14. Katrina,
Hey, I am in on it too! Only I am memorizing James, the Peters, the Johns and Jude. I have the Bible on CD in the truck and listen to those passeges almost daily. It realy helps in learning them 'from heart'. I will also be doing some 'writing the verses out'.
We will have to test each other periodically.

Still love your blog...keep it up!
    I love you.....much

  16. Katrina,

I think that this is a wonderful goal!! I have been working more on trying to memorize the word of God. What I find most wonderful is that on sleepless nights, it is what starts roaming through my thoughts. It is a blessing!! I hope you all had a wonderful week!!

    Many Smiles!!

  18. Good luck with your 'memboration' as my eldest used to call his memory when very young.
I thought my last post would be incomprehensible to non UK readers, but perhaps you have Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall, Kevin Mc Cloud and Jamie Oliver on your screens too?
